Default 5th Annual HOT ROD Pump Gas Drags Presented By COMP Cams®
Weather-extended Pump Gas Drags won by Jim Plimpton of Franksville, Wisconsin in his supercharged ’89 Thunderbird

Extreme engine temperatures and severe weather were unable to slow the efforts of Jim Plimpton and his impressive ’89 Thunderbird which took top honors at the fifth annual HOT ROD Magazine Pump Gas Drags sponsored by COMP Cams®. After hitting an incredible 300-degree engine temperature during the challenging 30-mile drive from COMP Cams® headquarters to the Memphis Motorsports Park, Plimpton ultimately converted that heat into power and cranked out a final round win. Plimpton’s supercharged, 572cid Ford-powered T-Bird recorded an impressive 8.536-seconds, 163.06 mph speed and defeated the ’70 red Nova of Ray Doughty, which logged a valiant 8.674 second, 160.14 mph effort.

The HOT ROD Pump Gas Drags is a unique event designed to challenge high performance race/street cars to not only pass a rigorous tech inspection and race on 93-octane Rockett Brand “pump” gas, but to drive from the tech inspection area at COMP Cams® corporate headquarters to the Memphis Motorsports Park (MMP) without the aid of support vehicles.

The two-day event was highlighted by the first ever Beale Street Bash at the Coyote Ugly Bar on the legendary Beale Street in downtown Memphis on Friday night, May 9. The Pump Gas Drags competition then kicked off on Saturday morning, May 10 and was extended to two days when severe weather shut down the race track after the first round of competition on Saturday. Racing resumed Sunday morning at 11 a.m. with four rounds of fast action culminating in the final race between Plimpton and Doughty.

The staff of COMP Cams® would like to thank all competitors and attendees for participating in the 5th Annual HOT ROD Pump Gas Drags – we hope you had as much fun as we did.

Default COMP Cams® hosts 2008 Pump Gas Drags Kick Off Party
Memphis’ legendary Beal Street played host to this year’s 2008 Hot Rod Magazine Pump Gas Drags send off party at the Coyote Ugly bar Friday night. With cool cars lining the street and plenty of good times inside, the party, hosted by COMP Cams®, was the perfect way to start the “horsepower festival” set to begin Saturday, May 10, at the COMP Cams® headquarters in Memphis. After tech inspections Saturday morning, the contestants will prove their vehicle’s “roadworthiness” by driving on a prescribed route to the Memphis Motorsports Park for the competition which will culminate in the crowning of this year’s Pump Gas Drags Champion.

The 2008 Hot Rod Magazine Pump Gas Drags, Presented By Comp Cams, had a kick off party last night in the heart of Memphis. Historic Beale Street saw many of the people who will be participating in this years event take a break from prepping their cars to blow off a little steam.

The kickoff party was something new this year that the people form COMP Cams came up with as an idea for everyone to hang out and relax the night before the event. The Coyote Ugly was the gathering spot for the participants, the crew of Hot Rod Magazine, including editor Rob Kinnan, and many of the people from COMP Cams.

On top of just a good time on the town, COMP invited a few local show cars to present the event on Beale Street. Although they were not the cars necessarily participating in the Pump Gas Drags, they were certainly pretty to look at and was a classic site on this historic street.

The Coyote Ugly lived up to it's hype as the on the edge place you see in the movies and on TV. The bartenders entertained us with dancing and whacky contests like the best boots of the night for men and the most attractive shoes for the women hosted by the local Classic Rock station, Rock 103.

Beale street has always been known for great live music, drinks, and fun and that was certainly the case here tonight. "This is going to be a new tradition for COMP Cams," says Chris Douglas, marketing manager for the COMP Performance Group. "it will take the edge off and relieve some of the stresses from the big day we have in store for tomorrow. This year we're expecting more cars, more activities, and a much larger crowd."

Some of the activities at COMP Cams on Saturday include a dunk tank, the famous COMP Cams Engine Builder Duel that debuted on Power Tour last year, and a variety of raffles, contests, and free for all's for the loyal event fans. "Last year we had a great event," says Matt Sadler, marketing coordinator for COMP. "but this year, we expect it to be even better. We really want to show that this a event for the real automotive enthusiasts, not just drag racers. Some of the cars we'll see this weekend are cars you wouldn't expect to see out on a drag strip. They pack beauty and speed all together and thats what really makes this event stand out."

The atmosphere of not only the bar and car show were something to experience, but really the whole of Beale Street it self really leaves an impression for visitors. You should put it on your calendar for next year to be here, and not to miss the kickoff party.

It's morning here at the COMP Performance HQ and the cars are beginning to roll in. It looks like we are going to have some pretty serious numbers put down later to day by some of the iron that's rolling in. Everyone is beginning to head through tech and get all their info for the 30 mile drive.

Some great license plates on the cars as well

We are currently running round two of qualifying for the Hot Rod Magazine Pump Gas Drags presented by COMP Cams. Four cars didn't make it from the COMP HQ to the track. One driver reports that his temp gage was over 300 degrees! "Thank God for O Rings and copper head gaskets" he said.

Some VERY stout cars running, though no times are being announced as only the quickest 32 will make the field. Knock on wood the weather is holding and it looks like we are going to get this one in.

Stay close because we will be bringing you coverage of round by round action. Now enjoy some pictures of the action from here at the track.

Well the commentators curse has struck. Just as we were about t run round two everything had to be shut down. There are several tornado warnings in the area and the track is in one of them. We are waiting on final word to see if we are done for the day or not. If they do have to cancel today, the event will finish in the morning.

Here are some round 1 action shots.
