Default 67' TH400 Wont shift from 1st gear
I have 67' Pontiac TH400 that has been rebuilt twice. Over 100k on the trans. Three months ago it wouldn't shift to 2nd. found the vac. line came off the modulator. put it on it worked fine. yesterday, similar problem. vac line was in place. put a new modulator on, still wont shift to second, even slips when hitting the throttle. could it be the governor? any other suggestions to investigate?

It definitely could be the governor. Pull it out and clean real good with brake cleaner and re-install.

THANKS for the help! Will try to find a gear. Its a real pain to get governor out of a 67 FB Ragtop. The cross-member and exhaust pipes interconnect and i can barely get a pinky finger in to get the bolts out. have to take the body brace out to drop the pipes and not sure how to get the cross-member out...

Was thinking of trying a governor recalibration kit. How does that work?? if you change does it affect both shifts 1-2 and 2-3? At slow speed 1-2 shift slams into second at abt 10mph. if you stay in throttle it winds out quite a bit longer. 2-3 shift slides right in smooth not tight at all. Does the recal kit affect these or the vac. modulator??

The governor recalibration kit and modulator adjustment can/will will effect all of those. The calibration kit comes with different weights and springs. The weights will affect the 1-2 shift and the springs will affect the 2-3.
