Default c4 help, intermittent second gear problem
i just finished rebuilding the c4 with a tci rebuild kit and the tranny works great. except it has this one issue, weve done maybe 5 or 6 test drives with it while tryin to tune the motor and maybe went 5 or 10 miles each trip. and you have to manually shift it since it has no kickdown cable, (it should but the guy has been running it like that for a long time and just never hooked one up) but once in a while when its in second gear and your goin slow without hittin the brakes or touchin the gas the car just slows down, acting like you just hit the brakes. but when you pull in down into first or shift to 3rd it releases and rolls away like nothins wrong and it will be fine for a while. most of the time it goes through the gears just fine its only done this a total of maybe 4 times. like a 1 out of 10 times when in second gear. its almost like something isnt releasing or something is a hair too tight. can someone point me in the right direction?

speedracer1000,
If the kickdown cable is not hooked up the trans should up shift by its just fine you should not have to manual shift it. As for the drag in 2nd gear the only thing i could think of is the Low/Rev has gone bad and is slipping or rolling over. Feel free to email or call with any further questions.

Thanks

Russ

thanks for the response russell. i tried to call and got your voicemail. he doesnt mind manually shifting it. but i think he would like to hook it up eventually. but you say that the low/ reverse could be goin bad, thats the drum that the band at the tailshaft end of the trans goes around correct? could i possibly have the band adjusted wrong? or what could i do to check that or fix it? another thing, what does that one way clutch/ sprag do at the back of the trans? because i had trouble with it when i took it out. i noticed that if i didnt have the spring carrier adjusted perfectly that the rollers wouldnt lock up just right. so i had to move those springs one way to keep the rollers tighter. then it was fine. but would that have anything to do with it? keep in mind that this rarely happens, like last nite we took it for a few rides and it acted perfectly fine. but then tonight it might act up again. im just looking for any possible ideas. i wish i understood better how the whole transmission worked because if i did i could diagnose it myself. if you have any more advice id appreciate it. thanks

Sorry i forgot i state is the low/rev roller could be going bad. The only fix it to measure the race's and replace the roller. With the issues you have that would be the problem area.
