Default c4 rebuild help
im workin on my buddys c4 tranny and im almost done with it but i need to know which clutches go in which drum, i have kit 528900. i have 5 grey clutches and 5 orange clutches. i took 5 clutches out of the forward clutch and i only took 3 out of the reverse/high drum(direct drum?). so which ones go where? right now i just put the 5 grey clutches and 5 steels back in the forward clutch and its exactly the way they came out. as for the reverse/high drum i got rid of the thick top washer and replaced that with an additional clutch and 2 steels, so i just have a regular steel on top so i could have an extra clutch and steel in there, totalling 4 clutches instead of the original 3. can someone tell me if im doin this right and what i need to check. i dipped them in tranny fluid also before i put them in, hope that wasnt a mistake.i had trouble gettin a straight answer a couple times from tci so i figured i would try here. life would be so much easier if they would label parts in their kits.

This is a standard re build kit. These kits come with no instructions other than for the TransScat Valve body kit. These kits are geared towards re builder use, or I recommend using an ATSG book.

The 5-Orange clutches are for the direct clutch pack, and the 5-Grey are for the forward. You might not use all 5 in each (maybe 4 clutches/4 steels in direct, or 4 clutches/3 Steels in forward). There should no more than 0.030-0.040" clearance in the direct (high gear), and 0.020-0.035" in the forward. In some cases stock steels may need to be swapped for select thickness steels.

ok, thats how i have it setup now then. i got a .030 feeler gauge between the snap ring and the top steel on the forward pack. i think its good then.. now for the direct, is it ok to have one of the thin steel pieces on the top in place of the wide original stee or will it bend that when the clutch applys?.. i did that so i could get an additional clutch/steel in there. but if thats not ok then i will take put it back to the original 3 clutch 3 steel setup with the thick steel on top. but right now i cant get a .010 feeler gauge between the snap ring and top steel. id also like to get it to shift a little harder if i can do so without having to go to a machine shop. so if theres any tricks i can do or if i should stay on the high or low side of the clearances let me know. thanks

also. i soaked the clutches in tranny fluid. is that bad? i figured it might affect my readings some

Yes, you can use a thinner steel in the direct for clearance. It is fine that you soaked the clutches in fluid. I suggest purchasing a ATSG or Chilton's manual for this kind of project.

If you purchased the 528900 it comes with the TransScat valve body kit. Just install that to Street/Strip specs for a firm shift.

Thanks,
