Default COMP Cams® Hosts Fourth Annual Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge
New format levels the playing field for competitors who will take on the COMP Cams® engine dyno September 15-18 in Memphis, TN

Once again, eight of the top Mopar engine builders in the country will descend on the Memphis, TN, headquarters of COMP Cams® in their quest to win the prestigious 2008 AMSOIL/Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge. An annual pilgrimage for Mopar power builders, this year the challenge will include a slightly different format using 440cid “spec” engines, a new test for this very competitive field of builders. As has become the norm, performance engine builder fans will be able to tune into www.powerperformancenews.com for photo and video coverage of the event.

Randy Bolig, Editor of Mopar Muscle magazine said, “This year's AMSOIL/Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge is a little different from previous challenges. In the past, we let the engine builders choose the parts they felt would work the best while staying within a specific set of rules. After the dyno testing was over, we tallied each engine's total peak horsepower and torque from a single dyno pull, and divided that number from the retail cost of a pre-determined list of hard parts used (e.g. heads, rods, etc.)

“This year we changed it up by specifying a stock stroke, a 0.030-inch maximum overbore and requiring the use of the same style of cylinder heads. Now, we place the burden of making power on the engine builder. Since we did have a short list of required parts, we removed the retail cost factor and decided to highlight the engine builder's talents and see what happens. This should be an exciting challenge for sure.”

Default Day 1 of the Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge
Today kicked off the 4th Annual Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge, and this year the competition looks to be tougher than ever. We have some returning teams and some new ones, and we have a completely new set of rules that must be followed when building the engines.

Things started off bright and early at the COMP Cams R&D facility in Memphis, TN with August Cederstrand of Cederstrand Racing Engines in Brea, California. This is Cederstrand's third year as part of a competing team, so he's no stranger to the competition or to COMP Cams as his engine ran a COMP cam and lifters.

After Cederstrand's dyno pulls, lunch was served to the group and then Mike Johnson of JMS Racing Engines in El Monte, California was up for his turn on the dyno. This is Johnson's first time in the competition but he'll prove to be a tough competitor.

It was a great start to what is sure to be a week of fierce competition and rivalry but also a lot of fun. Stay tuned for more!

Default Day 2 of the Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge
On our second day at the COMP Cams® R&D facility, the Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge began to show familiar signs of intense competition. With an already close race on the charts, two fellow engine builders, who rode down to Memphis, TN together, quickly became rivals in the competition. The competition remained friendly as the two teams provided assistance to the one another.

Beginning the day was Scott Schurbon of Schurbon Engine & Machine in Maquoketa, Iowa. This was Schurbon's second year to compete in the Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge. Once Scott was finished with the dyno, in stepped Mike Chenoweth of Chenoweth Speed & Machine in Morton, IL. This was Chenoweth's first time to compete in the event.

With this Mopar competition gaining intensity in a close race, who knows what will happen next?

Default Day 3 of the Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge
For the 3rd day of the Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge we again fired up the engine dyno in COMP Cams R&D facility. There have been some impressive horsepower number posted so far, but with a couple of heavy hitters still left, the outcome of the competition is far from over. Here are some of the highlights from today's action. First up is team Promax Performance out of Canada.

With ProMax Performance completing there three offical dyno pulls, it was now team J.D. Engines chance to show off their skills.

With both teams’ engines passing the qualifying round and completing three official dyno pulls, they are then inspected by editor David Young to verify they meet the contest rules.

With no major engine failures and some big horsepower surprises (can’t tell you about it yet!) today was considered a successes for all involved.

Only one competitor is left and scheduled for the engine dyno tomorrow morning. Stay tuned to see what happens when the Indy assembled engine gives our SuperFlow SF-902 dyno a spin.

Default Day 4 of the Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge
With only one team left, the atmosphere in the COMP Cams Research and Development facility was buzzing with excitement. As one of the "teams to beat" Indy Cylinder Heads had a lot to live up to in the horsepower department and they were very anxious to get their Mopar engine on the dyno. Like the other teams, the initial dyno pulls went smoothly with no parts failure.

After analyzing their dyno charts , Ken & Russ of Indy Cylinder Heads made some minor adjustments to the engine's timing and valve lash settings.

Three dyno pulls later Ken and Russ are happy with the results. What where the final numbers??? We'll let you know as soon as the guys from Mopar Muscle Magazine finish the judging. Look for a full feature article in the February issue of Mopar Muscle covering this year’s Mopar Muscle Challenge hosted by COMP Cams.

Default COMP Cams® Wraps Up Fourth Annual Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge
Eight expert Mopar engine builders descend on COMP Cams® R & D facility for another successful Mopar engine challenge

Packing powerfully potent Big Block Mopar engines, eight of the best Chrysler engine builders in the country dared to challenge the COMP Cams® engine dyno for the fourth annual running of the Amsoil/Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge. From September 15-18, the COMP Cams® dyno managed to contain the power of these “spec” 440cid Mopar engines, testing the creative assembly skills of a very competitive field of seven engine builders: Indy Cylinder Heads, ProMax Performance, J.D. Engines, Schurbon Engine & Machine, Chenoweth Speed & Machine, JMS Racing Engines and Cederstrand Engines. The results of this sure-to-be-legendary competition will be revealed in the February 2009 issue of Mopar Muscle Magazine.

In what is becoming an annual pilgrimage to Memphis for Mopar power builders, this year’s challenge was significantly different by requiring builders to retain the stock engine stroke, a 0.030-inch maximum overbore and the use of only one style of cylinder heads. The increased list of required parts netted the elimination of the retail cost scoring criteria used in other Mopar Muscle Engine Challenges and allowed this year’s competition to be more of a pure horsepower and torque building exercise. With updates to the event posted daily on www.powerperformancetv.com, fans could see the competition unfold as it happened.

Mopar Muscle editor Randy Bolig said, “This year's Amsoil/Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge is a little different from previous years. In the past, we let the engine builders choose the parts they felt would work the best while staying within a specific set of rules. After the challenge was over, we tallied each engine's total peak horsepower and torque from a single dyno pull, and divided that number from the retail cost of a pre-determined list of hard parts used (e.g. heads, rods, etc.).”

Check out the upcoming issues of Mopar Muscle for the full results and an indepth behind the scenes recap of the event.
