Degree Cam with COMP Cams 4925

Folks,
Been reading alot about cams (not sure if this is the right area in the fourm for this, but can't post anywhere else?); anyway I am going to degree my cam and I stumbled across this tool from Comp Cams: COMP Cams 4925 - COMP Cams Lobe Indicator Tools (at Summit)

I have a degree wheel and a dial indicator, so instead of using the magnetic base rig, I was wondering about this. In the Comp Cam tech info they refer to only the magnetic rig and say that it is best to degree off of the valve spring retainer area (with heads on). However, I have read about and would like to degree with the heads off.....so, anyone used this - or any advice pro or con???
