if this engine was not broke in what kind of damage am I looking at after putting 50 km on it.
thanks for helping me out.

i've seen my trucks AFR read 15.9:1 (afaik that is the maximum the sensor can cover) on deceleration.

Is that a hint to look for leaks or does the EZ-EFI V1 shutdown fuel supply if the TPS is 0% but engine rpm a considerate amount above idle?

It runs perfectly normal but the tailpipe is black on the inside... i wonder if the EZ adds fuel to fight the lean-on-deceleration situation.

Thanks,

I think my IAC is not working.

Is there a way to check it to see if it is opening /closing.

I have removed the IAC from the throttle body with the wiring harness connected.

No I have NOT unplugged the IAC with the power on.

Should I be able to see the IAC cycle by turning the key on and off.

I have also temporarily set the throttle follower and start IAC vs coolant temp positions to zero to see if the IAC cycles.

It does not seem to move.

After the key has been on for a while, the IAC does get warm as if it is getting power, it just does not seem to be moving.

Thanks,
Seems like fuel problem but fuel pressure is right on target. Put noid light in to check pulse and low and behold no pulse.

First, I apologize if this question has already been asked and answered. I tried a search but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

I have a SBC that I am converting with the EZ-EFI. Nothing particularly spectacular about this conversion - just looking for a the basic out-of-the-box setup.

My question concerns the tach signal issue. I am running an HEI distributor, but prior to this install I had already converted to the MSD box, so I'm running HEI and an MSD 6AL at the same time.

My question is this - currently my "tach out" terminal on the MSD box is running directly to my autometer in dash tach, which per the instrructions is exactly where it's supposed to be hooked up - if using an MSD box you can't run your tach signal directly off the coil or it voids the warranty, which I presume is a bad thing.

Since I know I need the MSD tach signal for the EZ ECU, can I simply splice the two together, and thus get a good tach signal from the MSD for both the ECU and the tach?

If I can't do this, then what other source would I have for getting two good tach signals?

Please tell me I'm not going to have to forsake my autometer tach in order to have a good tach signal for my EFI. . . .

A little help on this one will greatly help me get across the finish line and get this thing up and running. Thanks in advance, guys.

My question. I did a preliminary install to see where the roller tips of the rocker arms and touching the Valve Stem tip. I put a sharpie marker on each one and cycled the engine about 6 times. The markings that rubbed off are below center of the valve stem surface and not directly in the center.
Is this a problem? Thank you for your help.

Hi.

I've installed a 3- wire HALL speedometer sensor from Cyberdyne in my Ford T5 gearbox.

The signal wire runs to the XFI and I use it to log speed and also for the antispin function (although I have only tested this slightly....)

It has worked 100% but the 3. day out this spring, it suddenly did not show speed in the gauge... or in XFI.

The sensor was removed and tested today. All ears and mechanical issues OK. I hooked it up to 12V and the signal wire to the to the voltmeter and ground. The readings were just BS; voltage changed without wheel beeing turned and I did not see any 0 to 12V peaks as is supposed.

What can be the cause of such a sensor to stop working? Can voltage higher than 12V destroy these? Or are they just fragile and stop working? Just trying to eleminate any causes before I get a new sensor..

I googled and didn't find much and ask here since some of you know sensors....

So i mistakenly trusted my tuner and believed in them and long story short... my plugs keep fouling (5 out of 8 for sure, 3 not that bad but not great either) and i its clear that the main problem right now is that i am running way to rich during idle (based on data logging). my A/F is showing about 10 at idle. Anything below about 1500 RPMs is running rich basically very low 11's and into the 10's for A/F. Above 2000 RPM it looks like its behaving a bit more and into the 13's and even up into 14 at some points.

To begin, i have no knowledge of engine tuning but have been reading a ton in the past week. General motor info is 383 LT1 built for boost (plan to run 12 lbs with D1SC procharger) but running NA right now to break in. 9.5 CR. 32 lb injectors.

After speaking with the engine builder i want to use the adaptive learn feature to help dial in the fuel table/figures a bit and get the A/F ratio closer to where it should be and hopefully stop fouling the plugs.

My question is, can i set the Adaptive learn parameters to 0% TPS and to 50 degrees for the coolant temp and a relatively high idle gain so that the idle number start getting adjusted right away and aggressively? Or would this cause problems and maybe even stalling? I read that you usually dont want to adjust these number when the engine is cold but for the sake of saving the plugs this one time im asking if it makes sense to do this just once and once i see the O2 correction % drop down i can drop the gain % and also raise the adaptive learn temperature parameters so it doesnt learn on cold anymore. Does that make sense?

Thanks everyone.

How hard is it to pass the Driving test Alberta ?

I don't have an EU driver's license even though I have EU citizenship. I have 30 years of driving experience in the US and a valid US driver's license (expires 2014 and can be renewed thereafter)

1 Do I have 1 year to drive on a US DL before I have to get a UK license once I get residency? When does the countdown of 1 year start, from the date of NI issue? Or?

2. If I live in London, would it be possible to go to a small town and take my driver's test there? I presume I would also take my driving lessons there. I plan on taking a test with automatic transmission. I know that it would be easier than using my left hand to do manual shifting. I also know that automatic DL means i can only rent or drive an automatic car.

3. Is it really that difficult to pass the UK Driving test? What is it like, the theory and road test?

hi all,
Need some advice please

i purchased a rebuilt 460 from a private seller that has a comp cams valvetrain
solid cam, pushrods, guide plates, cast alum roller rockers.

Heres my problem, i had a shop fit the motor, asked him to check rocker clearances, he finished the job and advised that he didnt know the clearances and that he had backed them off and to take the car away to attend to some other issues and bring it back and he would find out correct tolerances and adjust the rockers.
after about an hour of running it dropped a cyl and i pulled the rocker cover to discover a broken rocker.
i then checked the clearances on the rockers to be 200-250 thou.
so my question, would these massive clearances be enough to snap a rocker in half or should i be looking else where, i dont have any cam or spring pressure info.
thanks dean

My fuel #'s do not make sense 64 at idle (160#, fuel constant at .68 for ethanol, fuel 70psi, injector offset set correctly) idles at .99 lambda

I have power and ground straight to the battery, cam and crank are isolated as best as can be and grounded on both ends.

I have some logs of it at idle and at about 25% tps opening.

XIM sync is at 7 but now and then goes to 10 or 1 then back to 7.

i run a fast xfi on my pushrod motor 1800hp no issues for over 5 years, this thing has me on the edge lol.

Hi all,
Just installed TCI Pro Super Transmission Overhaul Kit part number: 328800 to my th-350
The problem is now that there is no reverse and no 3rd gear. There is no engine braking also. I know that those use the same clutch, and the problem could be there.
And the engine braking problem could be in the last clutch.I don´t have my transmission book at hand so i can´t speak in proper terms, but i´m sure you know what i´m talking about.:)

But can any other thing cause those problems???

I´ve checked
-valves not sticking
-everything to the visual inspection seems to be in order
-proper amount of oil,and the right one
-lingage alingment,ok

What could be the problem??And if it is on those clutches, how can i measure/inspect them that they fuction or not???

The package also included that golden separator plate or such,is it meant to be used solely or with the orginal separator plate of the transmission???This confuses me because on the other forum they said that on B&M kits they should be used both,in sandwitch manner.???
There is now installed only the golden plate which came with the kit.

Please help,i´m beginning to lose my mind with this transmission!!!

All help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you,

trying to figure out why i cant get my xfi 2.0 to start as well as my friends classic, we discovered his other car with xfi wont start as easy either. Mine has to crank and crank and crank before she will fire, his classic will make 2 revs then fire right up. Ive copied all the tables, iac cranking fuel, even scaled the injectors from his 72's to match the same pulswidth i would need with the 83's. I even have gone as far as to adjust the battery offset voltage to match. Still no dice.

we logged my car xfi 2.0 with caspers direct harness, his ttop with xfi (1.34) and caspers adapter, and finally his 87 gn(x) with classic fast and precision harness and noticed some weird things.

this is during cold start

first attachment: as you can see with the classic everything is fine, rpm readings and injector dutycyle are in line with what we would expect

second attachment: ttop with xfi and caspers adapter- rpms read 12750 and dutycycle is maxed out for the moment

third: my car- 2.0 with direct harness, notice the rpms jump to 1500 and the dutycycle is maxed at 100%. (as a side note mine would not record an a/f richer then the leanest (15.94) xfi can read untill 3 seconds after the initial crank.

Could this be why we cannot get any xfi to start as well as the classic?? something has to be going on in the background here...

Two remaining issues are fuel pump SCREAMS after driving for about and hour and voltage drops on handheld as car gets warmer. Voltage in cars sytem does not drop. Power feeds for system are not showing low voltage. Feeds all upgraded to 10ga and solid. As far as fuel goes, happens no matter fuel level. Today was 3/4 tank straight flat driving and at idle. Regulator jumping 35 to 45 psi. Could feel a surge in the feed line also. Return line is fed through filler neck so shouldnt be cavitation.
Maybe I'm fussing over nothing but after my cars been running (BBC with XFI) for a while & I shut it off, if I go to restart after say 10 mins or so I have to let the fuel pump prime for the allocated 6 secs that I've programmed it for so that it fires straight away, is this normal or is there something I can do to enable me to turn the key on & crank straight away.

Thanks once again guy's for any info.
Testing my wiring and I cant get the fuel pump relay coil to activate, I am running sequential and I have the fuel pump ground wire, green, to the ground side of the relay but am getting no ground from the ECU.
Key turned on Im thinking the fuel pump should run for a set amount of seconds then shut off for the prime, am I correct here or must I crank the engine.
I was told that the ECU fuel pump ground wire is only for Bank to Bank setup, I hope this is not true as I want the ECU to run the fuel pump.

OK, today I got the car running for the first time which was great:)

However, this was with a friend of mine's ECU as I cannot get my ECU to register a crank or points signal input - or at least the lights on the ECU will not illuminate.
When I swap to the other ECU and leave everything else the same - including the gct file in the ECU then it receives the signals, fires & runs.

So what could be the cause of this? It is clearly an ECU issue.

So it could be a faulty ECU? I cant really see this as it is brand new, but how could I confirm?

Or it is to do with the upgrade. My mate had FAST do he's at the factory, I did mine with an emailed file. How can I test this?

Finally, one more thought from me...is there anything within the pages that need to be changed post upgrade that could cause this? My mates ecu has had all the post upgrade stuff done, where as mine has received the flash upgrade then a tune written for it.

My set up:
XFI 2.0 - upgraded with file
Dash Logger
methanol
Turbo
325lb/hr injectors
MSD 7AL2 Ignition/Pro Power coil

I have been working on my cold start tuning and ended up adding a lot of compensation fuel to keep the engine in a .75 to .8 lamda range with e-85 while until it reaches 140.
This has kept it from dying and having to restart but it still surges a little until it get some heat in the engine.
I noticed that after doing this it is temperamental at dead cold starts, and can backfire if it does not immediately fire. I have the iac set to 180 for cold starts.
This is a roots blower set up and I need to prevent backfires at all costs.
Is there any way to get the timing steady while cranking if I am using timing trim in my tune up?
I noticed while cranking that timing is jumping around. I imagine the timing trim is causing this while cranking. I am using timing trim to keep the engine from surging at idle.
Any tips to get a roots engine started fast to prevent backfires is appreciated.
It takes 5 to 6 revs to start the car when dead cold.
Regards

I just installed the FAST EZ EFI on a 460 engine I just completely rebuilt for my 78 F150 and I need some assistance with fine tuning this system and...

I just installed the FAST EZ EFI on a 460 engine I just completely rebuilt for my 78 F150 and I need some assistance with fine tuning this system and getting it running smooth.

First of all I have had issues with the engine stalling when I let off the throttle. I have the RPM set at 800 (down from 1000 with the carb I had on the engine). The RPM drops to about 400-500 rpm and dies after trying to stay running. Sometimes it will recover and stay running and settle down at 800 rpm.

NOTE: I have noticed that there is an extremely loud vacuum suction noise coming from the hole on the top of the throttle body flange that the air cleaner set on. This hole is about the size of a dime. It is so loud that I can hear it over the engine running while I'm setting inside the truck. I can't believe this would be a normal function of this system. Why is there a vacuum in this hole and what purpose does it serve? Any suggestions on this?

Meanwhile, I have taken readings 4 times now and although everything indicates that the system is functioning properly (the AL & O2 circles are checked) , I have no idea what these live data readings are supposed to be vs. what they are actually reading. That's one issue I need help with; what are the readings supposed to be? I’m not knowledgeable at all with the technical settings of EFI and what things are supposed to be set at. If there was a reading that was way off, I wouldn’t know it even if it was staring me in the face because I have no idea what the reading is supposed to be in the first place. Is there a listing somewhere that can tell me what the readings are supposed to be? I'm listing 3 of the live data readings below and I'm hoping someone can tell me if these readings are off or not and if any of these readings are an indication of why my truck is stalling when I let off the throttle (the 4th reading I did tonight after I made some adjustments and I will list further below after more explanations)....

4/28/13--RPM=800, O2C%=-03, IAC=5, CTS=187, TPS%=00, AF=13.5, MAP=38, BAT=12.8, ATS=70, INJ DC%=02, FUEL LB=06, LOAD%=39, AL & O2 circle is checked. This is the first startup since installation; warmed up to engine operating temp.

4/29/13---RPM=800, O2C%=-06, IAC=39, CTS=182, TPS%=00, AF=13.3, MAP=37, BAT=13.1, ATS=57, INJ DC%=02, FUEL LB=06, LOAD%=36, AL & O2 circle is checked. Drove @ 50 miles then took readings at idle

5/1/13---RPM=800, O2C%=-07, IAC=49, CTS=187, TPS%=00, AF=13.8, MAP=36, BAT=13.1, ATS=76, INJ DC%=01, FUEL LB=04, LOAD%=36, AL & O2 circle is checked. Drove about 2 miles then took readings at idle.

After these three tests the engine still stalls after I let off the throttle. I was hoping that after the ECU did some learning of the engine, it would automatically adjust the settings so it wouldn’t stall, but no luck. So tonight I got out the instruction manual and made some adjustments to the throttle blades, then bumped up the idle to 900 RPM, then recalibrated the TPS. The following are the readings after the adjustments.

NOTE: After adjusting the throttle blades farther open, the extremely loud vacuum noise coming from the hole in the top of the flange went away. I have no idea what this hole is for and why is sucks air, but if I open the blades a little more it goes away. I’m guessing it’s a bypass port in case the throttle blades are closed too much and won’t let air pass by them???? Am I in the ball park with my assumption? Can anyone tell me what this is and why it does what it's doing?

5/2/13---RPM=900, O2C%=00, IAC=5, CTS=187, TPS%=00, AF=13.3, MAP=30, BAT=13.3, ATS=89, INJ DC%=01, FUEL LB=04, LOAD%=28, AL & O2 circle is checked.

A few of the readings are definitely different from the first 3 readings. But after making these adjustments, the truck doesn't stall anymore, however the RPM still drops to about 700 rpm's and then jumps up to about 1200 rpm then settles on 900 rpm. So the idle is still bouncing around, but it's not dying anymore. HOWEVER, now I have another problem after making this adjustment. Now after I shut the truck off and try to restart it, I have to pump the throttle and squirt gas into the throttle body before it will start. I never had to touch the throttle before. And I don't know what to do to fix this problem. I shouldn’t have to touch the throttle at all with a EFI system. Other vehicles I own that has EFI I don’t have to touch the throttle for them to start, so why would I have to do that with this system?

Also, on a side note….As I was reading through the instructions on how to make these adjustments, I noticed a contradiction (at least it seems like a contradiction to me) and I was hoping someone could clarify….On page 21 in the instructions under IAC it states, “Idle Air Control. This is the position of the idle motor. At idle, it will move around to maintain the target idle speed. Displayed in “Counts”. Higher counts mean the idle motor is open more and allowing more air to bypass the throttle blades. Its range is from 5 to 180. Generally, this will be around 20 idling out of gear with a fully warmed up engine”.

On page 23 under the Advanced Options section it states…”It is worth noting that once the idle motor is in its fully closed position (the Live Data display shows IAC at 5), it cannot bring the idle speed down any further no matter what setting is entered here. If this happens, you will need to adjust the idle screw on the throttle body to close the blades more”.

So my confusion regarding the IAC is what should it be reading; 05 or 20???? I’m not understanding this at all and if you look at my live data readings, my IAC reading on the 4 tests I did are: 5, 39, 49, 5.

So given all this info with what I've done and the data readings and the issues I’m still having, can someone help me figure this out?

--What should all the data readings be?
--What should my IAC data reading be set at; 5 or 20????
--Why is there a loud vacuum suctions noise, but after I opened the throttle blades the suction
Noise goes away?
--Why is the RPM jumping around when I let off the throttle?
--Why does the engine stall?
--Why do I now have to pump the throttle to get it to start when I didn't have to before?

I have a 98 suburban w/ the 5.7 Vortec. Engine is currently stock and needs some valve work. I would like to upgrade the cam at the same time. Ideally I'd like to not have to do any machine work to accommodate the new cam and components. The truck does a lot of towing in the summer months and it struggles most keeping speed up hill and passing on the highway. Ideally a cam that would help address these issues would be great but any improvement in performance would be acceptable. Future upgrades may include shorty headers, cat-back exhaust and intake.

I'd like parts numbers for a recommended cam and all other components I'll need to go with it. Must be streetable and reliable, this is a daily driver, not looking to make huge power.
1. I was running the basic injector voltage offset "0" + or - @ 12V, and + ms below 12V, could this have prevented me from CLOSED LOOP?
2. Could this charging system have anything to do with my ECU "losing it's mind"?

Just wanted to let you all know how much I appreciated your help and a great product. The Ghia was running clean and mean, can't wait to fire it back up.

Hopefully, the Ghia will be in the next issue of The Goodguys mag, look for "Bad to the Bone" Jim
