Default EZ-Efi with Pertronix, any issues?
Hello all, I'm currently building a 1966 Dodge Charger with a 383.

I;m trying to do away with what ever I can off the firewall and would like to get rid of the Mopar Performance Electronic Ignition in favor of an Ignitor II or III ignition system with a Flame Thrower II or III coil.

Has anyone tried this with the EZ-Efi tach adapter? I;m really trying to stay away from an ignition box, but will go to one if I need to.

Thanks for the help.

You might be able to use the Ignitor 2, but I think the new Ignitor module does multi strike. If it does, you won't be able to use that. Just a quick tip if you are going to use the TACH Adaptor connected the negtive terminal of a coil, especially an aftermart one, put a 1000 ohm resistor inline with the negative terminal of the coil and the tach adaptor wire. Radio Shack sells them and it will protect the Tach Adaptor from any extra high voltage spikes that some of the aftermarket coils and HEI's put out. There are alot of guys running the EZefi like you are thinking about. Of course it would best to run an ignition box because of the cleaner Tach signal, but it isn't required.

Just re-read this after awhile, I ended up getting the Pertronix Ignitor II. However, re-reading this brought up another question, Ignitor III uses a multi-strike. I did get an ignition box with the distributor I picked up, but it is Pertronix's Second Strike...does the additional spark cause havoc with the EZ-EFI?

Second question, I need a ported Vacuum source for the fuel regulator and the Vacuum advance on the Distributor. There is only 1 ported Vacuum source on the Throttle Body, can I tee this to both components?

Thanks for the help.

The fuel regulator does not use ported vacuum. It needs a full vacuum port.
If you are going to run the TACH Adaptor that comes with the kit, you can't use a multi-strike ingnition. If you have something that creates a multi-strike, it usually has it's own tach output for a tach.

Thanks for the response Bluzman!

Should learn to read again...said hook to Vacuum port..not ported Vacuum...

I think I read it right after my Pertronix distributor instructions needing Ported Vacuum source for the Advance. I guess searching for a vac tee today was in vain

Engine is going on the Dyno Thursday...Thanks again for the Help!

No problem! Post how it does on dyno, too.

Hey Bluzman,

Wish I could say it went well, we broke in the cam and engine with a Holley carb, when we got to flat line of 364 HP @ 4800, instead of fine tuning with the Carb to find the best settings for this engine we switched to the EZ-EFI. This was 4 hours of Dyno Time...we then spent the next 8 hours trying to get it to work.

I logged several o2 sensor faults, would start up nice, but transition from idle to WOT was sure rough, (Fighting a lean condition). Peak HP was good, but we just could not get it to run anywhere near as smooth as the carb runs.

We were fighting Tach signal, found I had to ground the case of the second strike box we were using for RPM signal. Although running with the RPM FAST module didn;t really help.

We had our best run at 8:30 that night, a little better than the carb, and smooth, thought we were in the home stretch. My dyno guy just went out to make sure our timing was good, engine never ran right again. Wouldn;t start, stumbled, farted, everything you don;t want it to do. Looked like we lost RPM signal again. Shut it down for the night.

Next morning we found another 02 sensor (try to chase the o2 faults), I picked up wires and some new plugs to go with the mopar distributor I wasn;t going to use.

Fired it up, now instead of lean we went full rich! Talked to Robin about this, we went back to the original O2 sensor, cleaned up some wiring and noise issues. (Robin is great to deal with BTW). But no matter what we did, (differnet ignition box, different coil, different distributor, different wires, plugs, etc, etc.) it would not try to correct itself, and even with all 3 A/F targets at 15.9 still dumped fuel in around 10.1 (engine would almost run great with 2 of the 4 injectors unplugged).

We shut down at 5:30 that night, with no improvement at all....expensive run trying to get this to work...and unfortunately I still have no idea what my engine is capable of. Probably won;t know. ECU and O2 sensor has been returned for evaluation. Waiting to hear what the verdict is.

Can;t wait to find out...I still want to make this work....

I too have been having a issues with the EZ EFI, I have mine on a Corvette. My ignition system consist of new plug wires and MSD HEI with digital module that has a tach wire for a clean signal.I have a new racetronics fuel pump,The engine was surging at first and now it wont even fire up.
