Default Keeper of the keys to the ultimate camshaft?
Everyone expects that the guys in Research and Development are busy working on the latest trick new stuff. And since I’ve been on the R&D side for my entire career, I can say this is pretty much the case. But what about the ‘really trick stuff’, the stuff cool enough for people to dream up, but incredible enough to be generally regarded as impossible? Well, a few days ago I realized we’ve got some of that ‘stuff’ too – only thing is we don’t ‘admit’ to having it. Think Skunk Works. So why do we have killer stuff that we don’t admit to having? I guess this is the most logical question – I’d expect we’d want to come out on top and market the heck out of these unbelievable creations. Or maybe it’s the reverse; just say we don’t have it because people really want the things they can’t get. Well, the truth is actually far less sophisticated than a well thought out marketing ploy. The truth is you can’t handle what we’ve got, and our engineers know it.

Brian Reese, Director of Engineering COMP Cams

Okay, it’s not really you we worry about; it’s your engine that can’t handle it! What we can do with ‘bumps’ (what a ‘real’ camshaft guy calls a ‘lobe’) would make you more power than the next very greatest camshaft, but the rest of your valve train can’t keep up. Don’t blame the valve train yet, it’s more a matter of materials and the laws of physics – you can only do so much for so long before you exceed both. Did you catch the keyword there – ‘..so long’? Yes, the good news is that incredible things can be done, but only for ‘so long’. If you’ve got the desire, and you’re ready to live on the edge, we might just have something up the sleeve for you. Maybe they’ve made them out of here on occasion; of course we’d never admit to that!
