Just a few miles southeast of Houston, Texas, in the city of Pearland, there is a speed shop that specializes in all things LS. In fact, if you have ever driven along the Gulf Coast region of Texas, you have probably seen cars on the road that have been tuned by Mike Whitestone at G-Force Motorsports.
Like many car guys, Mike’s passion for pushing the limits of horsepower took off when he turned sixteen and got his first car, a 1996 Impala SS. He put a larger, nitrous injected engine in and never looked back. As Mike gained experience, he started tuning on the side. Then, about ten years ago he turned his hobby into a full-time job by partnering with a long-time friend to open G-Force Motorsports.
At G-Force Motorsports, the focus is on packages that make great horsepower without compromising drivability. Although they can, and do, work on just about anything, the majority of their time is spent working on late model LS performance street cars. Their work ranges from basic bolt-on packages to advanced set-ups with custom ground camshafts, state-of-the-art manifolds, custom fuel systems, CNC-ported cylinder heads and other radical additions. And the more aggressive the set-up, the more COMP Performance Group™ parts are used – from FAST™ intake manifolds and throttle bodies to custom ground COMP Cams® camshafts.
With the recent Camaro boom, Mike’s shop has been filled with 5th generation Camaros that have less than 100 miles on their odometers, and he has been loving it. It’s no coincidence that his latest personal project was taking a stock 2010 Chevy Camaro SS and beefing it up to output 700 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 626 ft./lb. at 5,200 RPM, while retaining near stock drivability. The radical success comes from a combination of Mike’s vast experience and the high-quality parts he uses, such as his Camaro’s new custom ground COMP Cams® hydraulic roller camshaft.
Making big power while retaining streetability is what sets G-Force apart. As Mike is quick to point out, “Anyone can put in a cam with 270 duration at 50 thousandths and make good horsepower, but drive it around and see what happens.”
The G-Force team strives to provide the most powerful and safest performance packages possible. But tuning cutting-edge cars takes cutting-edge equipment. The 10,000 sq. ft. facility boasts six lifts and a Dynojet 248X 1800 HP in-ground chassis dyno equipped with the super-accurate AFM1000 Air/Fuel Monitor.
Mike and his company may focus on street cars, but they’re no strangers to racing. They have spent the last five years racing an Extreme Street class in Texas. They currently hold first place in two different 1/8-mile classes this year with their COMP Cams® powered Small Block Ford Mustang. At three thousand pounds and equipped with two nitrous kits, the Mustang reliably runs in the low fives to beat out a competitive field filled with larger big block engines.
When asked about his business and why he relies on COMP Cams®, Mike had this to say, “The best part of my job is just seeing how excited the customer gets. We get a little jaded because we drive these things every day. But just seeing the guy bring a new Camaro in that makes 350 horsepower stock, and three days later he’s picking it up and it makes 620 − that’s nearly a three hundred horsepower increase. They’re just pleased as punch. Customer satisfaction makes me pretty happy.
“We pretty much stick with the COMP® family. We’ve just had good luck with them. We use a COMP® cam in just about everything we do. Also, I can order a camshaft – pretty much everything we do is custom ground – and I’ll have it in a day or two.”
Whether he’s installing a custom ground COMP Cams® cam or tuning a FAST™ XFI™ Fuel Injection System, Mike relies on the COMP Performance Group™ to supply the high-quality parts his customers demand.
