The best place to start would be timing. The Thumpr series cams always like a lot of timing. I would also recommend measuring for correct pushrod geometry. That will be a key in the noise and the timing should help with the cold starts. In all honesty, I don't ever use the Mutha in anything less than about 360 cubic inches unless it is a small, high compression engine. That is why Comp made three different versions, so every engine would have the option. Those cams also bleed off A LOT of cylinder pressure, so if the compression is low, combined with the small cubes, it will be hard to start and will not perform near where it should. I would perfer to see the screw in studs and guide plates in any application with an aftermarket cam, but that requires a lot of work on a Ford head. I would suggest a pushrod length checking tool and a lot of patience with this one.
