Default SBC valve spring identification
I just purchased a 355 SBC. It was built for dirt track racing and I dont know much about it. My question is how do I know what valve springs I need for replacement purposes. How do I go about finding out.

You will need to identify what camshaft is in it for starters. Most cams will have indentifying marks on the front or back of the shaft. If not you could take it to a machine shop and have them run it on a cam doctor or send it in to us and let us run it on the ADCOLE machine. You will also want to find out what kind of installed height you can get to on the heads that are on it and what spring diameter they can handle.

I removed the cam. it is a 12-506-5. Grind VQ2289-06. I measured the springs, they are 1.550 OD diameter. they are a three spring set up. it has the flat spring in the center of them. the retainer is 1.50. all the springs have the orange paint line. the push rods are part number 7993 7.900 .080. Im looking to see what valve springs these are for replacements. Thanks Aaron

The commonly recommended spring for that camshaft is our 950-16 spring.
