| | valve gap issue
I've got a comp cams solid roller and endure x solid lifters.Engine started running like crap. Checked valve lash and #2 exhaust and #7 exhaust feel spongey. You know how you check with your fingers and feel a little slop? I can put a 024 guage in but they feel like hydraulics not solid. All the others feel fine. Oh, T&D shaft rockers.
Any ideas? THanks, Floyd

I am having a little trouble comprehending what you mean by "spongy". The only way I have ever seen a solid lifter feel anywhere close to "spongy", the axle was worn, or the bearings had failed in the lifter itself. Even then, it really didn't feel "spongy", it just moves up and down a little more freely than normal. If you can give me a better idea of what you are feeling, I may be able to help you.

Hi Bill,
When I grab the rocker thereis no play at all. I can't wiggle it any. I can slide the feeler guage in but I'm pretty sure I'm not collapsing the spring. On the other rockers I can't slide the guage in. I sent the lifters back to Comp for a re-build, preventative measure and cheap insurance. Since I posted first I have checked spring heights with a straight edge and they are all even. I found the roller tips on #2 and #7 are a little rough. I can move the rollers and I can feel the slop. I don't know if that's enough to explain the loss of clearance but I'm sending the whole set back to T&D for re-build. I'm going to do a leak down today and check for any other problems.
Thanks for your reply. I will post anything else I find.
Floyd

Did the leakdown, 7-8% passenger side, 10-11% drivers side. The springs checked at 210# to 270#, not good. The heads are going to Mikeo, our local head guru, for a valve job, a little port tune up and new springs.
What springs should we use on a .714, .714 Comp solid roller cam?

Depending on your installed height, it would be either the 946, 947, or 948 springs that I would want to see on there. They are triple springs and are heavier than what you have now, but if you get one for a shorter installed height than you have, that will bring them closer to 300 #'s.

I sent the information to Autumn. She asked about rocker ratio and installed height.
1.7 T&D rockers, 2.000" spring height. I sure am curious to see if Freddy found anything wrong with my lifters.

Lifters are on their way back. T&D found nothing wrong with the rockers. Head guru found a "bunch" of broken springs. I think we have narrowed down the spongey feeling to pushrods rubbing against the head.

I am guessing Fredy didn't find any real issues with the lifters and the rockers checked out good, so that sounds like the correct diagnosis with the pushrods. A "bunch" of broken springs? That doesn't sound good at all. Well, I hope this minor surgery gets you where you need to be.

I'm thinking maybe the springs on the out of the box heads weren't right for the lift of the cam. It was the inner springs that were broke. I also had a detonation issue and a couple of bad valves.
Mikeo is going to clean up the ports, fix the guides and put good springs on. Maybe my pump gas motor should get a little more octane. I might have mis calculated the compression ratio. 4.500 bore, 10 cc piston top, 114 cc chambers, zero deck.

I am coming up with 10.66:1 with a .041" gasket. That shouldnt call for much more than about 93, I wouldnt think, unless this is a cast head. Of course, the chambers could be a little smaller than advertised, I have seen that happen once or twice.
