Question Weak point on TH350 pump
We have experienced repeated failure on the oil ring grooves on the TCI front pump in a TH350 we use for drag racing.
a picture of latest failure can be seen here:
(oops, just discovered that I cannot post pics or links directly as I have less than 10 posts...)

This has happened on 3 occasions, twice on the second groove (as shown above) and once on the top groove (shown above intact with the ring in place).
Would using nylon/teflon sealing rings prevent groove wear?
Our transmissions are modified with the TCI transbrake valve body but we do not use the transbrake to launch, however we shift at 7500rpm and go through the traps at 7700rpm.
We use the remanufactured TCI pumps part #313400 but have recently seen that TCI also offers part #327000, considerably more expensive, as a racing pump.
Would this pump be any improvement in the area where we experience problems? From illustrations and descriptions it would appear not.
From all other points of view the transmissions work a treat.
I would appreciate any information or suggestions, especially with regard to using teflon/nylon sealing rings.
Cheers from England.

to access, copy and paste on your address bar then remove the spaces at the beginning of the address (http: etc.)

I promise it's just a picture of the problem... I'm not a spammer!

You are using the correct pump part # 313400, I would use the teflon ring on the next rebuild, also check your forward drum and if there is any wear change it out. Also check the inputshaft where the bushing ride for wear.

Thank you, we have also wear on the forward drum, and have ordered an aluminum forward drum with shaft part # 323850, plus direct drum part # 327800 from Jegs.

Perhaps should have ordered it direct from you guys, (Stanley Poff always treats us well!!!) but were ordering a lot of other parts from Jegs and it seemed quicker that way.

A couple more questions..
  • Is the racing pump # 327000 not suitable or does it not give us an improvement over part # 313400?
  • Are the teflon rings as reliable as the metal ones?

thanks

Carla

The drums you ordered will have teflon rings with them, these rings work better in a racing transmission. The #327000 pump is for a NHRA- stocker applation its a low volume type pump, the 313400 pump will pump more fluid.
