Default ZEX™ Safe Shot Nitrous System - Quick & Affordable Blast of Horsepower
If you’re looking for a simple and affordable way to get an additional 15 to 35 horsepower boost out of your engine, look no further. The ZEX™ Safe Shot Nitrous System provides a way to get a “power shot” that’s simple, affordable and can be installed in as little as one hour.

How It Works

The ZEX™ Safe Shot System is an uncomplicated system that delivers a quick blast of nitrous to the engine. It begins at the nitrous bottle, which delivers pressurized liquid nitrous oxide through the flexible delivery line to the nitrous solenoid. From there, the solenoid, which is normally closed, can be opened when the nitrous system is armed and the activation pushbutton is pressed.

This activation delivers a nitrous shot from the solenoid to the nitrous nozzle that’s mounted in the air intake. The volume of nitrous injected in the engine is adjustable through a metering jet in the nozzle, which permits easy adjustments in horsepower settings. Fuel adjustments are required and are made via readily available handheld power programmers, such as SCT, Diablosport, etc.

The system readily accepts all popular accessories such as purge kits and remote bottle openers. And, for those who want more, the system can be upgraded with the ZEX™ upgrade kit to turn the Safe Shot into a full-blown wet nitrous system that’s capable of safely adding 55 to 175 horsepower. It is the only upgradeable entry-level nitrous system in the industry.

ZEX™ Safe Shot kits come with everything needed for installation, and the components are premium quality for safe, reliable long-lasting service.

Getting Started

Before you start the installation process, it’s a good idea to take some time to locate the best places to mount the various kit components. Among the first steps is to decide where the nitrous solenoid will be located. This is important because the steel braided line that connects the solenoid to the nitrous nozzle is 11 inches long and must be located within reach. Then, observe and mark the location on the air inlet tube where the nitrous nozzle will go.

The arming switch and activation pushbutton should be installed in a position inside the car that’s convenient to the driver, but not in an area where it could be accidentally armed or activated.

Next, determine where and how the nitrous supply bottle will be mounted. The instructions provide technical information regarding bottle mounting.

With the location for the components determined, installation can begin. Take a look at the following installation pictorial and you’ll see that this is a quick and uncomplicated process.

Step By Step Instructions

Before any other process begins, it’s important to disengage the power. This is done by taking the ground cable off the battery.

With the power disconnected, the next step is to install the nitrous bottle. In this example, the trunk well of a 1999 Camaro Z28 is the perfect location for the bottle, which is mounted with the outlet facing down. ZEX™ nitrous bottles are designed with a siphon tube that draws the nitrous from the bottom of the bottle. The bottle should always be mounted so as the vehicle accelerates, the liquid flows toward the pickup tube. Again, the included installation instructions explain this further.

Next, the nitrous line is attached and routed to the engine compartment. When drilling an opening, it’s important to use the included rubber grommet to shield the line from wear as it goes through the trunk sheet metal. It’s also important to use the sub-frame as a conduit. This will protect the line and eliminate the need for clamps. If they are needed, the supplied cable ties work if you can run the line higher in the under-body so that it is safe from road level obstacles.

Now the bracket that holds the solenoid in place is mounted. In this example, the brake master cylinder unit provides the location for mounting.

With the bracket in place, the solenoid unit is mounted and the nitrous line is attached. The exit nitrous line is also attached and routed to the air intake.

A hole will be drilled in the air intake so the nitrous nozzle (as shown here) can be inserted. Optimum nozzle placement is 6” to 18” from the throttle body. This range gives the nitrous and air sufficient time to mix before entering the intake manifold plenum. Also, it’s important to know that the nitrous nozzle must always be mounted after the mass airflow sensor, never before. Make sure the location of the nozzle won’t interfere with other components. When the nozzle is mounted, the solenoid nitrous supply line is attached, which completes the nitrous line connection.

Now the wiring is connected. Note that the solenoid wiring consists of two connections as shown here. One is the ground and the other is routed through the activation pushbutton, the arming switch, the fuse and then to the power source. A wiring diagram is included in the instructions.

This photo shows the switches that will be mounted inside the car. The toggle arms the system and the red button engages the nitrous system when it is pressed.

With the system installed, a handheld programmer is needed to tune the engine for the additional fuel required for the nitrous system, then you’re ready to experience the blast of horsepower from the ZEX™ Safe Shot Nitrous System.
