Speed Secrets: Why Air-Fuel Ratio Matters When Tuning

When expert tuners and engine builders put a car or engine on a dyno to do tuning, they are constantly monitoring air/fuel ratio, but what about the guy who doesn’t have access to that real time information on a dyno? 

So how do you monitor air/fuel ratio on the street? Before diving into that, it’s important to understand why air/fuel ratio is important. A/F is a key component for making maximum power.  The A/F ratio changes depending on the operation of the engine – I.e. the A/F ratio is different at idle than it is at wide open throttle. Similarly, different setups need different air/fuel ratios – a naturally aspirated engine will have a different A/F ratio than a turbo engine.

For modern engine, an air/fuel monitor is vital to getting the tune done correctly. Back in older times, these weren’t as readily available, but now they are. You no longer have to run the engine over and over again to get it right. If things go really wrong, you can damage your engine, or even blow it up!
