Speed Secrets: It’s Time For a Supercharged Cam Test!

On this episode of Speed Secrets, it’s time to look at a 1,000-horsepower camshaft from COMP Cams – that’s not to say the cam is responsible for all this power, but it’s a great supporting mod for the blown 5.3-liter engine. If you’re going to run a supercharger on your LS engine, you need a camshaft made for boost.

To put this to the test, the team built a 5.3-liter engine with forged bottom end internals. COMP Cams supplied a dedicated camshaft, part 54-477-11, that’s meant for use with blower applications. The cam used features a .614/.624 lift, a 227/243 duration, and 114 LSA.

After the cam and lifters were installed, the engine was buttoned up with a new timing chain. Then the heads were installed, as well as an intake, before it was thrown up on the dyno to get the baseline numbers.

On the dyno, the engine was run without the blower for an engine break in, oil change, and pushed to the max power of 466-horsepower and 412 lbs/ft of torque. Now it’s time to boost the blower cam to see it all come together.

The supercharger in use is a ProCharger centrifugal supercharger, run with 21.5 psi of boost. On the dyno, the 5.3-liter exceeded 1,000-horsepower and 758 lbs/ft of torque. This is what happens when you put together a winning combination.
